Pyrgos, (Burgas), initially a small fishing settlement, supplanted neighbouring Anchialos and became, from the middle of the 19th century , one of the most important ports of Bulgaria. The Greek community, one of the most significant in Bulgaria, maintained some schools and numerous societies whilst, at Pyrgos, two newspapers were also published. Many Greeks were successfully engaged in trade, shipping or industry. The persecutions of 1906 signified the gradual diminution of the Greek presence. |
